Montréal, le 23 avril - La Galerie Circulaire propose une sélection de quinze sérigraphies de l’artiste écossais Chad McCail. Cette série a été commanditée et publiée en 2008 par l’Edinburgh Printmakers, un atelier d’estampes qui encourage, par un accès facilité aux ateliers, la pratique et la diffusion des arts graphiques. Pratiquant tour à tour le dessin, la peinture et les techniques d’impression, Chad McCail utilise la sérigraphique pour créer des planches aux narrations fortes et percutantes. Les oeuvres présentées à la Galerie Circulaire traitent des relations entre individus et de l’impact pour le moins contrasté que celles-ci peuvent avoir sur le développement de notre civilisation. D’un côté, des planches aux accents robotiques, agressifs et uniformes qui, à l’instar de Compulsory Education, illustrent un système éducationnel déshumanisé et hautement standardisé. De l’autre, des illustrations d’un style plus réaliste et fourni, qui, comme Puberty 6, thématise la transmission générationnelle des connaissances et des valeurs : en exposant avec patience et bienveillance les qualités et les risques d’une lame tranchante, le vieillard offre à ses jeunes une métaphore simple mais explicite de l’existence. Aux jeunes maintenant de faire leurs expériences et de se confronter, comme dans Puberty 2 et Puberty 4, aux plaisirs et déceptions qu’occasionneront leur plongée passionnée dans la vie.

Chad McCail (1961) travaille et habite à Thankerton, en Écosse. Après son Baccalauréat en littérature anglaise à l’Université de Kent, il achève un diplôme en beaux-arts au très réputé Goldsmiths College de Londres. En 2000, il a exposé au British Art Show. Il a participé à de nombreuses expositions à travers l’Europe et les États-Unis.

Montreal, April 23rd, 2010 - From May 8th to June 19th, Galerie Circulaire will be exhibiting a selection of 15 silkscreen prints by Scottish artist, Chad McCail. The series was commissioned and published in 2008 by Edinburgh Printmakers, a printmaking studio that encourages the practice and diffusion of graphic arts by facilitating studio use. Chad McCail’s practice alternates between drawing, painting and printmaking. He uses silkscreen printing to create the stage for strong and acute narrations. The works to be presented at Galerie Circulaire address the relationship between individuals and the impact that these can have on the development of our civilization. On the one side are scenes with robotic, aggressive and uniform qualities. For example, in Compulsory Education, they illustrate a dehumanized and standardized education system. On the other side are realist illustrations such as Puberty 6, whose attention to minute details aids in the embodiment of the generational transmission of knowledge and values. The wizened old man, with the cutting wisdom of a sharp blade, offers the youth a simple but explicit metaphor of existence, demonstrated with patience. All that remains is for the youth to experience and confront existence on their own, as in Puberty 2 and Puberty 4: where pleasure and deception give rise to their passionate submergence in life.

Chad McCail (1961) lives and works in Thankerton, Scotland. After finishing his Bachelor in English Literature at the University of Kent, he completed a diploma in fine arts at the renowned Goldsmiths College in London. In 2000, he exhibited at the British Art Show and has participated in numerous exhibits across Europe and the United States.
